We hope you have your fire extinguisher by now. Seriously, we have two right by our oven. If one catches on fire, we have the other to put it out. That’s how serious we are about this.
If you don’t have one yet, go and buy one. While you’re out, make sure to pick up a coffee maker. Yes this is our first time and money-saving tip. You don’t even have to buy one, see if your parents or friends have an extra one lying around that you can use.
“D&E, this doesn’t sound like a time or money-saving tip.” Oh yeah, ask the frequent visitors of Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, or Java the Hut (is that a real place? If not we call dibs on the naming rights). Over the course of a semester they will have wasted enough money to buy a textbook.
Still don’t believe us? Let’s do the math:
- A decent coffee maker is about $30
- Ground coffee (270 6oz cups worth) is $10
- Filters $1
- Sugar $2
- Creamer $3
- Coffee tumbler $10
That’s a total of $56. Let’s estimate that 5 out 0f 7 days a week you drink 12 ounces of coffee. A semester is about 15 weeks; therefore, you have 75 cups of coffee a semester. So the average cost for a cup of coffee for you is:
$56/75 cups = $0.75/cup
For the students who fork over $3/cup at Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts or Java the Hut (they could have mini light saber stirrers!), they are spending $225 a semester on coffee! There we just saved you $169, enough for an overly priced you-have-to-have-this-textbook (or like 3 textbooks if you buy them used on Amazon).
“Wow D&E, that’s great and all but I don’t have time in the morning to brew some coffee.”
Option A: Wake up 5 minutes earlier than normal, prep the coffee machine, let it run while you shower.
Option B: Most decent coffee makers can be programed to begin brewing at a specific time. Before you go to bed, prep the coffee maker and set it to brew when you wake up. There is nothing like waking up to the smell of brewing coffee.
Worst case scenario, you woke up late and forgot to set the coffee maker. At this point just take in your tumbler to any Starbucks and they give you a discount for being eco-friendly.
